<p>Not a single soul will deny that Assam's lone Ramsar site, the 'Deepor Beel' is in a deplorable condition. In fact, <a href="https://www.change.org/p/letssavedeeporbeel-only-ramsar-site-of-assam?recruiter=980362678&amp;utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_medium=copylink&amp;utm_campaign=share_petition"><em>Inside Northeast has even started a petition</em></a> to draw attention to the plight of the 'Beel' as part of its #LetsSaveDeeporBeel campaign. Now, the question that arises in the mind of all environment lovers is how to salvage this once-glorious site. A small company from Assam's Tezpur town, which is widely regarded as the cleanest city in the entire country, might just have the solution!</p>

<p>The company making the difference in Tezpur is Radiant Skills and Environmental Solutions Pvt. Ltd, which is slowly allowing Tezpur to retain it's status as the cleanest city in India. Ashok Baruah, the MD of the company, revealed to <em>Inside Northeast</em> how this company is helping Tezpur remain clean, green, and beautiful with proper waste disposal and segregation.</p>

<p>Baruah reveals that he began his environmental crusade (remarkably, without any aid from the Government) when he signed an agreement with Tezpur Municipal Board. A solid waste management plant was lying unused for years like 'Deepor Beel' and was taken on lease by Radiant. This is in line with Tezpur history where the first electric supply was started in Assam in 1930 by the Lahiri family, a private company.</p>

<p>First, a survey was carried out to find out how much waste is generated in Tezpur with the help IIT Guwahati. Then, the team from 'Radiant' visited Tezpur civilians door-to-door to create awareness about waste management, disposal, and segregation. Then, a roadmap was charted to figure out the entire layout of the city and how the waste would be transported.</p>

<p>Baruah, taking the issue of waste disposal seriously, even organized a street play 'Ek Notun Dinor Aahban', (Heralding a New Day) in 45 locations across the city, to better acquaint people with the subject. Then, 'the waste fighters' distributed two dustbins to the people -- a green (for bio-degradable waste) and blue (for solid wastes). They were also given a manual on how to segregate waste.</p>

<p>Both bio-degradable and non-biodegradable wastes were collected by the company in their iron waste containers, which would immediately head towards the processing plants. What is most interesting is that the garbage would be collected in non-polluting electric rickshaws! "We separate the wastes according to their nature as segregation is of most importance. At the moment, w are covering 11,000 households, and 450 commercial organizations", Baruah beams.</p>

<p>Baruah also reveals that the company also plans to convert 'waste to energy' as part of its new Rs. 450 crore project funded by Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). "I need 100 tonnes of waste to produce 15MW electricity per day day as per the Israeli 'cold plasma gasification technology', which converts the solid waste into green power, purified water, and zero carbon fuel", he says.</p>

<p>While discussing the 'Deepor Beel', Baruah says the 'cold plasma gasification technology' can help the wetland as well</p>

<p>"The Government should monitor the 'Deepor Beel' and I would recommend a Public-Private-Partnership to resolve the issue, as the existing system cannot deal with the waste that is being accumulated there", Baruah cautions.</p>

<p>The entrepreneur also says that the concerned authorities should deploy people door-to-door to create awareness about the waste segregation in Guwahati which will help the 'Beel'. "We should change the mindset of the people and inform them. Tezpur is now the cleanest city because are now aware about environmental issues. People have accepted the initiative, and the change", says the entrepreneur.</p>

<p><h4>Guwahati, July 7, 2019:</h4></p><p>In a notification of the State Government’s Environment and Forest Department ordered by the Governor dated December 28, 2016, four elephant corridors were identified on the railway track that passes through the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dipor_Bil">Deepor Beel</a>.</p><p>In the order, the Governor also directed to constitute a Coordination Committee in each of the elephant corridors of Assam to prevent the death of wild animals, especially the elephants.</p><p>Also Read : <a href="https://insidene.com/2019/06/26/meet-the-elephant-guardians-saving-elephant-lives-near-deepor-beel/">Meet the Elephant Guardians Saving Elephant Lives nearDeepor Beel</a></p><p>As per the notification, the four identified elephant corridors fall under the Forest division- Guwahati WL Division for which the Railway division falls under Rangia, under the Azara station. The corridors are: 64/0 to 64/9, 164/0 to 165/0, 167/0 to 168/0 and 67/0 to 68/9.</p><p>Out of four corridors only in 167/0 to 167/5 a tunnel has been constructed and rest are open which is most destructive for the wild animals.</p><p>However, the Ministry of Railway and the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) has been constructing the double railway track through the 'Beel' that has created a threat to elephants as well as the other animals of the region.</p><p><h6>Inside Northeast’s Campaign #LetsSaveDeeporBeel is now supported by Oil India Limited (OIL). People from different parts of the country and abroad visit this place every year. So we need to preserve and save it. Assamese Actor Nishita Appeals To All To Preserve And Save Deepor Beel

<p><h4>Guwahati, June 23, 2019:</h4></p><p>Assam's only Ramsar site -- the 'Deepor Beel' -- is one of the 44 polluted stretches of river in Assam according to a recent assessment by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).</p><p>The CPCB in association with State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs)/Pollution Control Committees (PCCs) monitors the water quality of rivers across the country through a network of monitoring stations under the National Water Quality Monitoring Programme.</p><p>Union Minister Prakash Javadekar while replying to an unstarred query from Rahul Ramesh Shewale of Shiv Sena and senior leader of Biju Janata Dal in Lok Sabha on June 21st, 2019 stated that the 351 rivers stretches on 323 rivers have been identified as polluted river stretches, based on the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) level.</p><p>The Deepor Beel, which is one of the most important sites of Assam, is an open lake basin connected with a set of inflow and out flow channels. Originally, the beel had its natural linkages with the river Brahmaputra through the Sola Beel and the swampy areas of Pandu to the northeast.</p><p>Due to construction of residential buildings, NH-37 and Railway line the main link has already been disrupted and it remains as a small secondary channel. A perennial stream originating from Basistha runs through the heart of the Beel and joins the river Brahmaputra through Khanamukh towards north of the Beel. The stream is also fed by Bharalu river.</p><p>The polluted river stretches of Assam are: Bharalu, Borsola, Deepor Beel, Digboi, Kamalpur, Panchnai Brahamputra, Kharsang, Pagladia, Barak, Baroi Bega, Beki, Bhogdoi, Boginadi, Borbeel, Bordoibam Bilmukh, Burhidihing, Dhansiri, Dikhow, Dikrong, Diplai, Disang, Gabharu, Holudunga, Jia Bharali, Janji, Kalong, Kapili, Killing, Kohora, Kulsi, Malini, Mora Bharali, Parashali, Puthimari, Ranga, Samaguri, Sankosh, Silsako, Sorusola, Son, Sonai, Tenga Pukhuri.</p><p>On the other hand, nine river stretches in Manipur (Nambul, Imphal, Iril, Khuga, Khujairok, Lokchao, Manipur, Thoubal, Wangjing); seven in Meghalaya ( Umkhrah, Umshyrpi, Kyrhukhla, Nonbah, Umtrew, Lukha, Myntdu); nine in Mizoram (Tiau, Tlawng, Tuipui, Tuivawl, Chite, Mat, Saikah, Tuikual, Tuirial); six in Nagaland (Dhansiri, Dzuna, Chathe, Dzu, Dzucha, Sano); four river stretches in Sikkim (ManeyKhola, Rangit, Ranichu, Teesta); six in Tripura (Burigaon, Gumti, Haora, Juri, Khowai, Manu) have been identified as polluted river stretches.</p><p>Deepor Beel has both biological and environmental importance besides being the only major storm water storage basin for Guwahati city.</p><p><em>Inside Northeast’s Campaign #LetsSaveDeeporBeel is now supported by Oil India Limited (OIL). 'Deepor Beel' is one of 44 Polluted Stretches of River in Assam

<p><h4><strong>By: Rana Pratap Saikia, June 29</strong></h4></p><p>The Guwahati Municipal Corporation's (GMC) dumping ground at Boragaon area in Guwahati city of causing great distress to the residents of 'Deepor Beel'. In fact, a startling video surfaced last year which showed many fish floating lifeless in the 'Beel'.</p><p>The 'Deepor Beel' located in Assam's Guwahati city is home to many endangered species of birds and water species. But these species have been endangered due to the constant dumping of wastes into this wetland.</p><p>The GMC has been using a remote area of Boragaon to dump waste including industrial, medical, household waste since 2004.</p><p>The dumping ground is causing a problem for both humans and different amphibians in Deepor Beel. The waste comprises junks and waste of industries including heavy metals, plastics, aluminum cans, etc.</p><p>Local Environmentalist Kandarpa Boro has complained that this downward spiral began in 2005 as all kinds of toxic wastes are being dumped in the area. "The wasteland is located at the southernmost end of 'Deepor Beel' and causes much problem. Moreover, the ecological system has been depleted due to the pollution of the water. Most of the migratory birds have stopped coming here", he says.</p><p>Moreover, the locals have said that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the dumping ground to be removed, but only time will tell whether the 'Beel' will be saved or if its too late. <p><h4>Guwahati, June 30, 2019:</h4></p><p>The locals of 'Deepor Beel' have been doing whatever they can to protect the beauty of this ecologically-sensitive zone so that tourists can derive happiness from spending time at the scenic spot which is a popular destination as it is located just outside the metropolis. which is the only 'Ramsar site' in Assam.</p><p>These people have been doing that, and they have also been protecting the elephants in the 'elephant corridor' by keeping at at nights to ensure that the pachyderms do not get hit by trains.</p><p>Today, these concerned locals met Rajya Sabha MP and Bodo People's Front (BPF) leader Biswajit Daimary at his residence and urged him to take their issues to the concerned authorities so that the 'Deepor Beel' is saved and also to stop the pollution and degradation of the pride of Assam, the 'Deepor Beel'.</p><p>They asked the Rajya Sabha MP to take up discussions with the concerned authorities and departments so that steps can be taken to salvage the 'Beel'.</p><p>"When the locals of an area take it upon themselves, nothing is impossible, thus, since you have come out for this noble cause, I am sure that the 'Beel' will be preserved", said the Rajya Sabha MP.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha MP has also extended his support for the <em>Inside Northeast</em> campaign. 'Deepor Beel' Locals Meet Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary to Seek His Help to Save Wetland

<p><h4>Guwahati, July 14, 2019:</h4></p><p>Although the Deepor Beel has been declared as a Ramsar Site, the proposed conservation measures are yet to be implemented at the site.</p><p>Many measures were initially suggested to ensure that the 'Deepor Beel' is protected, but to no avail. Firstly, the halting of trains should be avoided within the boundary of 'Deepor Beel'. Also, the land and adjacent to the railway line should be kept free from any encroachment.</p><p>Since noise pollution is also a major issue, to keep the noise level down, suitable plantations should be raised on either side of the line, and any form of settlement should not be allowed within the low-lying parts of Deepor beel even if private owned lands are available;</p><p>The further destruction of adjacent hilly forest should not be allowed (destroyed during construction of railway line) and eco-restoration should be initiated immediately.</p><p>Moreover, Saikia and Bhattacharjee (1987) have proposed that the entire 'Beel' be notified as a bird sanctuary.</p><p>Moreover, it was suggested that the effectiveness of the <em>Deepor Beel</em> system as a storm water detention basin for Guwahati city should be preserved and the increasing pressure of storm runoff from the city to the 'Beel' should be lessened through creation of additional storage capacity in the naturally depressed areas within the greater metropolitan area.</p><p>Considering the urgency for solution of the water logging problem of the city, the use of the 'Deepor Beel' system as a storm water reservoir should receive high priority and other uses of the beel system should be so planned as to be compatible with this overriding objective and it was also suggested that the city runoff which includes sewage should be treated before being discharged into the Deepor beel system.</p><p>It as also suggested that more area should be covered under Bird sanctuary which includes highland within it, and other small naturally depressed areas also should be included and proper plantation programme should be initiated to create breeding ground of residential waterfowl.</p><p>Land cutting, brick making factory and industrial development should be stopped within and in the surrounding areas of Deepor beel, it was suggested, and all forms of government settlements should be stopped immediately and the area should be preserved as a natural state.</p><p>The development of bird related ecotourism for the benefit of local habitants and for conservation education was also one of the measures that was to be undertaken.</p><p>It is to be mentioned that thought such measure were being listed in the conservational measures, no steps have been taken to conserve the Beel so far. Conservation Measures for the Ramsar Site 'Deepor Beel' Yet to be Implemented

<p><h4>By: Arup Deka</h4></p><p>Unfortunately, the 'Deepor Beel', which is situated in South west of Guwahati city located in Kamrup metropolitan district on the southern bank of Brahmaputra river is now filled with poisonous plastic bags which is degrading the environment. Because of this, the flora and fauna of the 'Beel' are under serious threat.</p><p>Despite Deepor Beel’s proximity to the sprawling Guwahati city and nearby settlements, the Asian Elephant- Elephas maximus regularly visits the Beel, but the elephants too are in peril due to the railway track that passes through the wetland.</p><p>In the nearby Rani and other forested areas, mammals such as Hoolock Gibbon Hylobates hoolock, Assamese Macaque Macaca assamensis, Rhesus Macaque Macaca mulatta, Capped Langur Trachypithecus pileatus, Slow Loris Nycticebus coucang, Leopard Panthera pardus, Jungle Cat Felis chaus, Leopard Cat Prionailurus bengalensis, three species of Civets (Large Indian Viverra zibetha, Small Indian Viverricula indica and Palm Paguma larvata), Mongoose Herpestes sp, Sambar Cervus unicolor, Barking Deer Muntiacus muntjak, Chinese Pangolin Manis pentadactyla species are found.</p><p>Apart from the fauna, a large variety of aquatic flora of tropical wetland is found in Deepor Beel and its adjoining areas. On one side, it is surrounded with Terminalia belerica, Tectona grandis (plantation), Ficus bengalensis, and Bombax malabaricum as dominant tree species. The Giant Water Lily- Euryale ferox is of considerable botanical and economic importance. Dominant aquatic plants include Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Ottelia alismoides and Lemna minor.</p><p>At present, the number of these species has led to a steep decrease due to heavy urbanisation. This is directly affected the aquatic plant species and other species.</p><p>The beel is also under serious threat because of the intervention of both government and other private ventures. On the other hand the NF railway is also constructing a double-track railway through the beel.</p><p>The main sources of water of this lake are the Basistha and Kalamoni rivers, and local monsoon run-off between May and September.</p><p>The Beel drains into the Brahmaputra river, located about 5 km away. About half of the Beel dries out during the winter and the exposed shores are converted into paddy fields. The Rich Flora and Fauna of Assam's 'Deepor Beel'

<p><h4>Guwahati, April 30, 2019:</h4></p><p>The pristine wetland “Deepor Beel” located in the southwest of Guwahati city in Assam's Kamrup district is turning into a wasteland just like the other water bodies in the state that includes the Bharalu and the Brahmaputra along with its tributaries.</p><p>The threat has been created as it has turned into a dumping ground of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation that is dumping tonnes of its waste near the wetland, destroying Deepor Beel's scenic beauty and its aquatic biodiversity in the region.</p><p>The wetland which earlier spread over 4,000 hectares has shrunk to 500 hectares. Cause for concern as Assam's Deepor Beel

<p><h4>Guwahati, June 5, 2019:</h4></p><p>Guwahati Development Department (GDD) Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya has rued that the Deepor Beel is under threat and hailed the awareness campaign launched by Inside Northeast to save the only Ramser site of Assam.<p><iframe allow="" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360"  width="640" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/7BOJuYfFmz4" allowfullscreen></iframe></p></p><p>While endorsing the # LetsSaveDeeporBeel campaign launched by Inside Northeast, Bhattacharya said, “Deepor Beel is a lung of Guwahati, because it not only accumulates the surplus rain water that we receive which flows into Deepor Beel. Deepor Beel is under threat from firstly because of the sewerage that has been allowed to drain into it without any kind of treatment.”</p><p>Bhattacharya said Assam Government has already created a Deepor Beel Conservation Society. “We have undertaken steps to protect it. We will try to save it. Assam GDD Minister says Deepor Beel Is Lung of Guwahati

I do feel we must save Deepor Beel. It will affect the life of human beings as well as that of animals.”</p><p>Deepor Beel has both biological and environmental importance besides being the only major stormwater storage basin for Guwahati city. It is considered as one of the staging sites for migratory birds in India, and some of the large congregations of aquatic birds in Assam during winter.</p><p>Because of the richness of avian fauna it enjoyed, Deepor Beel has been selected as one of the Important Bird Area (IBA) sites by Birdlife International. Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi hails #LetsSaveDeeporBeel

<p><h4>Guwahati, June 20, 2019:</h4></p><p>Noted Assamese singer Anima Choudhury has joined Inside Northeast in their bid to preserve Assam's lone Ramsar site, the 'Deepor Beel'.</p><p>Expressing concern due to the current threats faced by the wetland, she has said that earlier the 'Deepor Beel' was a beautiful place to visit, but with time, it has gotten polluted. "We must preserve the Beel", Anima Choudhury added.</p><p>It may be mentioned that the ‘Deepor Beel’ has become a classic example of how wetlands are abused due to clashes of multiple interest.</p><p>Although a protected site under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, 1971, continuous encroachment reduced this wetland to one fourth of its original size.</p><p>To make things worse, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation had chosen this Ramsar site to be the city’s municipal garbage dumping site! Degradation of this important water body started heavily with dumping of waste by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in close proximity of the water body since 2006, flouting all norms of municipal solid waste rules.</p><p>The death of Greater Adjutant Storks in the vicinity of Deepar beel, tells the story of how the GMC and the sheer apathy of the state forest department has turned this important bird area turn into a danger zone for the globally threatened species!</p><p>Deepor, as the very name suggests, is a traditional refuge of the elephant and has been protected as a wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary, in order to remain alive and perform some definite ecosystem services, needs more a conservational approach. However, the new government policies seem to ride over this very fact. The Guwahati smart city mission envisages Deepar beel as a water park. It has been reported that a high level meeting chaired by the state Chief Minister recently has come up with plans of constricting the protected area boundaries of the Sanctuary to its half!</p><p>Continuous encroachment has already reduced this once 4,000 hectare (ha) wetland shrunk into less than 500 ha area! Singer Anima Choudhury Urges People to Save 'Deepor Beel'

<p><h4>Guwahati, July 11, 2019:</h4></p><p>The<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dipor_Bil"> Deepor Beel</a> was proposed to be declared as an “eco-sensitive zone” in the year 2015.</p><p>The hearing for the proposal was heard by the Department of the Forest. However, even after the passage of more than 3 years of time, no initiatives have been taken to declare it as an “eco-sensitive zone”.</p><p>Rather, a double-track railway is being taken up as the latest pet project of the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) through the Deepor Beel.</p><p>A local activist, Pramod Kalita has informed that the government has been maintaining “double standards” over the matter. Moreover, many infrastructures like towers of the aviation, power supply, etc have been installed in the area which passes directly through the Beel, which is a total violation of the guidelines of an “eco-sensitive zone”.</p><p>Also Read : <a href="https://insidene.com/2019/07/11/750-unemployed-youths-to-be-provided-with-skill-training-in-assam/">750 Unemployed Youths to be Provided with Skill Training in Assam</a></p><p>'The Beel' is a great food source and a great breeding ground for a large variety of residential water birds as well as a number of migratory waterfowls, amphibians, reptiles, insects, micro and macrophytes, terrestrial weeds.</p><p>The Department of Forests, Assam has listed 170 species of Birds – two critically endangered, one endangered, five vulnerable and four near-threatened such Spot-Billed Pelican, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Greater Adjutant Stork, Black Necked Stork and Large Whistling Teal.</p><p>The most notable bird species found in the sanctuary are Kingfishers, Fishing Eagles, a plethora of ducks, Greater Adjutant Stork, Whistling Teal, Open Billed Stork, Shoveler, Pintail, Garganey and high concentration of Pheasant Tail Jacanas.</p><p>Some of the largest congregations of aquatic birds in Assam can be seen here, particularly during the winter. Will the 'Deepor Beel' be Declared as an 'Eco Sensitive Zone'?

<p><h4>Guwahati, July 13, 2019:</h4></p><p>Amid fervent appeals from environmentalists to salvage the decaying environment, the Assam Government and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) have finally taken a step in the right direction.</p><p>In a notification issued on July 12, the GMC has  mentioned that all institutions and commercial establishments need to maintain two sets of dustbins including a blue one (for dry waste like paper, bottle, plastics, etc) and a green one (for wet waste like leftover food, vegetables etc).</p><p>Minister Pijush Hazarika also informed about the 'clean and green' initiative of the Government via social media. He wrote: "We have started door to door garbage collection under Swatchh Bharat Mission(Urban).I urge all the people to cooperate with us.Thanks to the Municipal Board Chairpersons,EOs,CPOs,all the Municipal board employees,NGOs and SHGs for their great effort.Hope this would be carried on to make the towns clean and garbage free."</p><p>But will it be enough to save the 'Deepor Beel'? Wetlands like the 'Beel' are important as they act as a natural storage of excess rainfall and reducing flooding. Wetlands are repositories of diversity, ecology and livelihood support system of local people.</p><p>Wetlands are one of the world’s most important environmental assets, containing a disproportionately high number of plant and animal species compared to other areas of the world. Throughout history, they have been integral to human survival and development. However, the 'Deepor Beel' in Assam is facing numerous threats due to a number of reasons.</p><p>Presently, several species of birds and water body species at Deepor Beel are facing an endangered environment. While the water body is contaminated with harmful materials/chemicals, the GMC is using an area at Boragaon to dump waste since over a decade.</p><p>Moreover, the ongoing encroachment around the Beel may in due course wipe the water body from the existing map it is feared.As per a forest department source, dumping of municipal waste continued in the vicinity of the water body puts the Ramsar Site wetland under ecological threat.</p><p><em>Inside Northeast’s Campaign <strong>#LetsSaveDeeporBeel</strong> is now supported by Oil India Limited (OIL). Assam Begins Initiative to Keep Towns 'Clean' and 'Garbage Free'

<p><h4>Guwahati, July 20, 2019:</h4></p><p>A three judge’s bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) reiterated that the State Government has no alternative but to shift the dumping ground in question from the existing site near 'Deepor Beel' as it falls within the Deepor Beel, during its hearing on July 16.</p><p>The bench comprised of Justice S. P. Wangdi- Judicial Member, Justice K. Ramakrishnan- Judicial Member and Dr. Satyawan Singh Garbyal- Expert Member.</p><p>In the statement released by the NGT, it was stated, “Although the video conferencing could not be held in this case also as in the other cases, Mr. Nalin Kohli, learned Additional Advocate General for the State of Assam has appeared to inform us of the steps being taken by the State of Assam for shifting the waste dumping site from the Deepor Beel elsewhere and the impediments faced by the State in doing so. State Government has no Alternative but to Shift Dumping Ground from Deepor Beel: NGT

<p><h4>Guwahati, June 11, 2019:</h4></p><p>Noted Assamese singer Tarali Sarma has appealed to the people to save Deepor Beel for future generations.</p><p>Endorsing the #LetsSaveDeeporBeel campaign launched by Inside Northeast, Tarali Sarma said, “First of all I am proud to be an Assamese. Assam is such a beautiful land you all are aware of it.We need to save our own land. We need to save it for ourselves; we need to save it for our future generations. We need to save it so that the world can see we have beautiful places.”<p><iframe allow="" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360"  width="640" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/8CkMdO-LzEc" allowfullscreen></iframe></p></p><p>Appreciating the awareness campaign ##LetsSaveDeeporBeel initiated by Inside Northeast, she said, “Deepor Beel is a beautiful place. It is a wetland. So I personally request you to be aware of these kinds of facts, to stay alert and save our beautiful places. Specially, at this point of time let’s start with saving Deepor Beel.”</p><p>Deepor Beel is an open lake basin connected with a set of inflow and out flow channels. Originally, the beel had its natural linkages with the river Brahmaputra through the Sola Beel and the swampy areas of Pandu to the northeast.</p><p>Due to construction of residential buildings, NH-37 and Railway line the main link has already been disrupted and it remains as a small secondary channel. A perennial stream originating from Basistha runs through the heart of the Beel and joins the river Brahmaputra through Khanamukh towards north of the Beel. Assamese singer Tarali Sarma Appeals to People to Save 'Deepor Beel'

<p><h4>Guwahati, June 8, 2019:</h4></p><p>Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu has emphasized the need for protecting and preserving Deepor Beel.</p><p>Endorsing the awareness campaign #LetsSaveDeeporBeel initiated by Inside Northeast, Pegu said, “It is high time that we need preserve Deepor Beel. If we don’t preserve it then we will always see the artificial floods happening in the days to come.”</p><p>Appreciating the endeavour of Inside Northeast to create awareness on saving Deepor Beel, Pegu said, “Deepor Beel is one of the biggest water bodies in Guwahati. It is one of the water bodies which actually takes the entire water loads of Guwahati city.”</p><p>According to Pegu since Deepor Beel is the only Ramsar site, it becomes all the more important to protect Deepor Beel.<p><iframe allow="" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360"  width="640" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/HcoVyWjgJgc" allowfullscreen></iframe></p></p><p>“We need to, we have to protect and preserve Deepor Beel,” he asserted.</p><p>The Beel is a great food source and a great breeding ground for a large variety of residential water birds as well as a number of migratory waterfowls, amphibians, reptiles, insects, micro and macrophytes, terrestrial weeds.</p><p>The Department of Forests, Assam has listed 170 species of Birds - two critically endangered, one endangered, five vulnerable and four near threatened such Spot Billed Pelican, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Greater Adjutant Stork, Black Necked Stork and Large Whistling Teal.</p><p>The most notable bird species found in the sanctuary are Kingfishers, Fishing Eagles, a plethora of ducks, Greater Adjutant Stork, Whistling Teal, Open Billed Stork, Shoveler, Pintail, Garganey and high concentration of Pheasant Tail Jacanas.</p><p>Some of the largest congregations of aquatic birds in Assam can be seen here, particularly during the winter. Besides its rich fauna, the sanctuary is ideal for an encounter with other wildlife including Hoolock Gibbons, the only ape species in Indian subcontinent.</p><p>There is a watch tower inside the sanctuary, constructed by the forest department.
