GMC on the Lookout for Alternate Dumping Site to Replace 'Deepor Beel': GMC Commissioner

Guwahati, July 30, 2019:

It seems like the Guwahati Municipality Corporation (GMC) Commissioner is not oblivious to the threats posed to the Ramsar site 'Deepor Beel' by various elements, it seems. He reveals that the body is on the lookout for alternative sites which can be used to dump waste which is being dumped into the 'Deepor Beel'.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, the GMC Commissioner Debeswar Malakar:"We visited many places like Chandrapur, Sonapur, Kalangpar and, Amingaon to find another dumping ground as the dumpite site is being shifted from the 'Deepor Beel'.

"Chandrapur is situated near Brahmaputra river so it will affect the river which is a source of water for the entire city. A team scouted the area, but came to the realization that the Brahmaputra will be affected. Thus, we are on the lookout for an appropriate area, so that the area is not affected", he said.

"We have informed the National Green Tribunal about the adverse affects and we're searching a plot for the dumping and are ready for shifting", he added.

The GMC continues its search for an appropriate plot of land "It is not like we are not making efforts to find a solution to the problem at hand. We also invited bid for west to energy project. We are planning for proper drainage system."
