Abonmai Murder Case: Manipur CM apologies for security lapses; 16 police personnel to be investigated

IMPHAL: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has warned any individual or group involved in the abduction and killing of Athuan Abonmai, former president of Zeliangrong Baudi, and said culprits will not be spared.

The Manipur government has constituted a three-member special committee to probe into the same under the Chairmanship of IGP (Intelligence) K Radhashyam Singh, CM Singh informed the press yesterday.

"As the Home Minister, I apologise to the people for the security lapses that led to the incident," said the Chief Minister.

Singh also came down heavily upon the police personnel for not intervening while Athuan Abonmai was being abducted in broad daylight. It was also informed that as many as 16 police personnel including the OC, SI and ASI were identified for their grave misconduct and dereliction of duty and have been put under suspension.

"we will investigate if any of the personnel had any link with the terrorist group, who hatched the plan. Under IG Radeshyam a strong committee has been formed and will interrogate all the suspended personnel one by one and departmental enquiry will be completed," said Singh.

Singh added further," I assured the people of Manipur and to the family of late Abonmei that we will book the culprits whoever are involved in the crime."

The case to be handed over to NIA if any organisation under ceasefire agreement is found to be involved in Abonmai's murder said CM.

The Manipur Cabinet will decide on providing ex-gratia to the next of kin and also extend all possible assistance to the bereaved family members.

Former president of Zeliangrong Baudi, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland (AMN) Athuan Abonmai was found shot dead on Wednesday at around 7:30 pm at Pallong village, 7 km from Tamenglong district headquarters.

The incident took place in the wake of Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s visit to Tamenglong. Politician cum activist Abonmai came to attend a government program at Tamenglong.
