An Assam Rifles Major post commander has allegedly shot dead a man in Chawla village of Manipur last night and following which outrageous villagers have set ablaze army vehicle.

IMPHAL: An Assam Rifles Major post commander has allegedly shot dead a man in Chawla village of Manipur last night and following which outrageous villagers have set ablaze army vehicle.

Reportedly, one Major Post Commander of 44 AR E Coy, Gelnel village (Banglabung) outpost, and three others in civil dress in a civil vehicle carried out an operation at Chalwa village with service weapon last night at around 9 pm and victim Mangboilal Lhouvum was allegedly brought onto the roadside and fired upon.

The victim was rushed to the primary health center in Waichong village in critical condition. The doctor referred him to District Hospital Kangpokpi for better medical treatment but the victim succumbed to his injuries before reaching Kangpokpi near Chawangkining.

The victim was the sole bread earner of the family of five survived by his wife and four children.

There were allegations that the Major of 44 AR E Coy, Gelnel village(Banglabung) outpost has been roaming freely with his service weapon in civil dresses and collecting information for his own benefits for a month now.

Members of the civil society of the area alleged that the accused Major reached in his civil dress brandishing his service revolver.

"The deceased person Mr. Mangboilal's last words were that Major Alok shot him," said Thangminlen Kipgen, General Secretary of Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi District.

"It is is his personal testimony that he was shot at by Major Alok. The police are here. Why are they afraid to arrest such a person?" asked Kipgen.

Kipgen added further, "He was not a central government employee or army man. He was in his civil clothes. Now, what is the police waiting for?"

After a heated confrontation Kangpokpi police led by Addl.SP(Ops) and OC Chalwa Police Station took the AR Major into their custody and brought him down to Kangpokpi Police Station.

The dead body of Mangboilal Lhouvum had already been deposited at RIMS Morgue for post mortem by Kangpokpi police this morning.

However, the CSOs decided not to claim the dead body unless the issue is solved amicably.
