Imphal: A massive landslide has occurred near Maram in Senapati district of Manipur along the National Highway 2, Imphal-Dimapur Road. The landslide took place yesterday at around 5 pm in the evening. Fortunately, no one was injured. However, movement along the NH-2 route has been completely stopped.

Footage from the site of the landslide shows people gathering near the spot to check out the extent of the damage. The landslide has basically left a huge gaping hole right in the middle of the road. A truck that was parked along the stretch fell into a deep gorge. Meanwhile, the local administration has already kickstarted repair work.

The truck seen in the video was parked there.. When the road started crack and all occupants were out of the vehicle n checking the road conditions.

Talking to Inside Northeast, a source informed that the NH-2 has been blocked due to the debris of the landslide.

"Basically, the landslide occurred in a region that is prone to landslides. Therefore, concrete structures had been made on the side of the hill to prevent a catastrophe. However, the incessant rains over the past 2-3 days caused the landslide," the source added.

This comes a day after the Manipur government issued an alert for flood and landslide in the state due to incessant rains.

Issuing a notice to the Deputy Commissioners of Manipur, K.H. Leiyaphi Rita, the Director, Relief and Disaster Management of Manipur, has warned that due to the incessant rain, the water level of most of the rivers has been raised to “warning level.”

“You are therefore requested to take up precautionary measures as there is possibility of flood/landslide prone areas due to this incessant rain in coordination with Department of Water Resources of Manipur,” the Director wrote in the letter.

Further, a toll-free telephone number (1070) has been installed as ‘standard disaster helpline; in the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) of the office. An old telephone number to provide relief (0385-2443441) is also operational.
