Foothills Naga Coordination Committee’s indefinite bandh in Manipur enters day 10, govt silent

The indefinite bandh called by the Foothills Naga Coordination Committee (FNCC) in the Naga-inhabited foothill regions of Manipur has entered its tenth day, with the state government maintaining silence despite growing tensions and disruptions to daily life.

The bandh, which began at midnight on July 18, is a protest against the proposed construction of the German and Tiger roads through Naga ancestral lands without prior consent, the continued presence of illegal Suspension of Operation (SoO) camps of Kuki militants, and the unchecked expansion of poppy cultivation in the region.

Road blockades have been enforced at several strategic points, including Makhan in Kangpokpi district, Tongjei Maril (Old Cachar Road), Dolang Chiru, Tupul to Noney Road, Tupul-Noney Junction, and Longsai-Khoupum Road in Noney district. FNCC volunteers have ensured strict enforcement, particularly restricting the movement of Kuki individuals, deepening the ethnic tension in the area.

In its press release, FNCC warned that it would intensify the agitation if authorities continue to ignore its demands. “The government’s continued silence after ten days of peaceful protest is unfortunate,” said B. Robin Kabui, Secretary of FNCC. “If any untoward incidents occur, the authorities must bear full responsibility.”

The FNCC has described the bandh as a peaceful but determined stand to protect Naga ancestral land, identity, and security. The protest has garnered widespread support from Naga organisations across Manipur, underlining growing frustration and anger over what many see as systemic neglect of indigenous rights and concerns.

Despite the mounting pressure and disruption, the state government has yet to issue any official response, further inflaming tensions on the ground.
