Imphal police replaces auto hood for Manipur’s first woman driver

In a heartwarming gesture, the Imphal East Traffic Officer-in-Charge honoured a promise by replacing the hood of Laibi Oinam’s auto-rickshaw.

Laibi, celebrated as Manipur's first woman auto driver, has become a symbol of resilience, breaking stereotypes and inspiring change.

Taking to his X handle Manipur CM wrote, "I am delighted to share that, as promised earlier, the hood of the auto belonging to Laibi Oinam, the first woman auto driver of Manipur, has been replaced by the Imphal East Traffic OC. This small gesture reflects our commitment to supporting individuals who inspire change in society. May her story continues to inspire countless others to challenge norms and pursue their dreams fearlessly."

Once a brick kiln laborer, Laibi faced relentless challenges when her husband’s severe diabetes left him bedridden, making her the sole breadwinner for their family.

Turning to driving an auto-rickshaw—a profession dominated by men—Laibi defied societal norms and persevered despite ridicule and unsolicited advice to pursue ‘womanly’ work.

The Traffic OC’s gesture not only supports her journey but also underscores the importance of uplifting individuals who challenge conventions and pave the way for others.

Laibi’s story is a testament to courage and determination, continuing to inspire countless others to follow their dreams fearlessly.
