Manipur CM clarifies Mekola relief camp death, cites family issues behind suicide

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, responding to questions about the recent death of a woman at the Mekola Higher Secondary School relief camp, stated that the incident was likely due to personal family issues rather than ill-treatment or inconvenience within the camp.

“We have registered an FIR, and based on the information available to me, the incident seems unrelated to conditions in the camp. The investigation is already underway,” the chief minister assured.

A 20-year-old woman, identified as Sukham Chanu Devi, died by suicide at a relief camp in Imphal West on January 7.

Chanu, originally from Singhat in Churachandpur district, had been married for just four months to Sukham James. The couple had been staying at the Mekola Higher Secondary School relief camp along with two other family members.

Chanu was found hanging near her bed around 4:15 pm, reportedly when her husband was away at work.

Police have confirmed that her body has been sent to the JNIMS morgue for post-mortem, and a case has been registered by Nambol police.
