Manipur observes National Cleanliness Day on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary

The Manipur government today observed the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi as National Cleanliness Day, also known as Swachh Bharat Diwas, at Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal.

Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla attended the function as the chief guest and led the gathering in offering floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, former Chief Minister, MLAs, Chief Secretary, DGP, senior civil and police officials, and members of the public also paid homage to the Father of the Nation.

In his address, Governor Bhalla reflected on Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring values of truth, non-violence, and self-reliance, stressing that they remain as relevant today as they were during the freedom struggle. He highlighted Gandhi’s idea of self-reliance as a call for people to take responsibility for their own growth and contribute to the progress of society.

The Governor also lauded the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission, noting that Manipur has made significant strides in sanitation and waste management through the efforts of local bodies. He said these achievements, recognised at the national level, reflect the collective commitment of citizens, local authorities, and the state government toward creating a cleaner and healthier living environment.

He further added that initiatives like Make in India are opening new opportunities for the youth of Manipur, with indigenous products and handlooms gaining recognition while creating sustainable livelihoods. Bhalla urged citizens to adopt cleanliness as a way of life, not merely a civic duty, and to work together in building a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Manipur.

The event also featured cultural performances, including a captivating dance choreography of Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram presented by the Government Dance College and a soulful rendition by artistes of Shri Shri Bal Mukanda Dev Musical College.
