Manipur: Saitu MLA visits relief camps, assures swift action for internally displaced persons

Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen visited a relief camp at Phaijang village, in Manipur within his constituency to evaluate firsthand the conditions faced by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). The visit, marked by his personal engagement with camp residents, aimed to understand the challenges and grievances of those uprooted due to recent conflicts in the region.

Kipgen commended the district administration for their efforts in establishing a large structure capable of sheltering hundreds of displaced families. "The administration's commitment to the needs of those affected is commendable," Kipgen stated, acknowledging the ongoing support provided to the IDPs.

Addressing the camp, the MLA revealed ongoing initiatives to create semi-permanent residences for IDPs, a project he has been pursuing diligently for several months. "By the end of this year, many displaced families will have access to more stable living conditions," Kipgen assured.

He further elaborated on the government’s support for these efforts, stating, "The Government of India is committed to providing semi-pucca or semi-permanent residences for those willing to construct their own homes." He outlined the allocation of Rs 10 lakhs for the construction of each semi-permanent house, contingent on the completion of necessary documentation and formalities by the IDPs.

"In my constituency alone, around 21 houses are expected to be sanctioned shortly," he noted, emphasizing the government’s financial backing for this initiative.

When questioned about the timeline for the displaced families' return to their original homes, Kipgen acknowledged that a return was not yet possible. "We cannot simply go back; we need to ensure that our concerns are fully addressed first," he emphasized, indicating the complexities involved in ensuring the safety and stability of the displaced population.

The MLA reassured the camp residents that while permanent settlements might take time, the government is committed to providing semi-permanent housing as an interim solution. "Although a permanent solution is still in progress, a semi-permanent settlement will be made available by the Government of India. I hope this will be completed within the year for those who apply and provide the necessary documents," Kipgen stated.

During the visit, Kipgen offered a message of hope and solidarity, encouraging the displaced individuals to remain strong in the face of adversity. "You are not alone in this struggle," he said, urging them to have faith in the government's efforts to secure their future.

His visit was met with appreciation and gratitude from the camp residents, who expressed their thanks for his ongoing support and dedication to their welfare.
