Manipur violence: Tensions grip Kangpokpi after two attacks by armed miscreants

Kangpokpi district finds itself in the grip of escalating tension following two separate attacks reportedly carried out by armed miscreants. The incidents occurred on the evening of February 7.

According to reports emerging from the region, the unrest began when a significant movement of armed individuals was observed making their way from the valley towards the Phailengmol hills, brandishing sophisticated weaponry. This development immediately set off alarm bells among locals, who feared the implications of such a coordinated movement.

However, the situation took a dire turn later in the evening as L. Tangnaum Kuki-Zo village in the Kangchup-Leimakhong area came under attack from armed assailants purportedly hailing from Senjam Chirang and Koutruk, peripheral valley villages bordering Kangchup-Leimakhong. Eyewitnesses recount a scene of chaos as sporadic gunfights ensued, persisting into the early hours of the morning.

Remarkably, despite the intensity of the clashes, there have been no reports of casualties on either side. However, another assault was launched, this time targeting L. Tangnaum village once again.

The unrest did not confine itself to a single location, as reports soon emerged of a separate attack in Monglham Kuki-Zo village, situated in the Phailengmol area near Maphou Dam.
