Tribal bodies hold vigil in Churachandpur, reiterate demand for UT with legislature after Thanlon MLA's death

Thousands gathered in Churachandpur to mourn the death of 56-Thanlon Assembly Constituency MLA Vungzagin Valte, whose passing has deeply impacted tribal communities in the hill districts of Manipur.

A candlelight vigil was held on February 25 at the Churachandpur Medical College campus, drawing students, civil society organisations, village representatives and members of the public. 

The programme was led by tribal student bodies including the Kuki Students' Organisation, Hmar Students' Association and Zomi Students Federation, reflecting a coordinated show of solidarity.

Participants paid tribute to the late legislator and reiterated the long-standing demand for a separate Union Territory with a legislature for the hill areas. Slogans were raised calling for justice and political safeguards, though the overall tone of the gathering remained solemn.

Earlier in the day, Valte’s body was brought to the district hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

Speakers at the vigil described his death as a significant moment for the tribal community and said the demand for political arrangements for the hill districts would continue through constitutional and democratic means. They emphasised unity and peaceful assertion of their aspirations.

Valte’s eldest son addressed the gathering, urging people to remember his father’s work and commitment to the community. His remarks drew an emotional response from those present.

Leaders of the participating student organisations said that paying tribute to the late MLA would involve carrying forward the issues he had raised, including his appeals for greater political safeguards for the hill areas. They also acknowledged the support extended by the public and thanked those who facilitated the transportation of his mortal remains for the final rites.

Representatives of the local village and defence groups expressed solidarity with the family and called for continued unity among tribal communities.

Observers noted that the vigil reflected both grief and a renewed articulation of political demands, with organisers stressing peaceful mobilisation and collective resolve in the days ahead.
