Meghalaya: North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union calls off strike, resumes transportation of petroleum products

The North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMU) has decided to call off the strike and resume the transportation of petroleum products to Meghalaya after a meeting held on Wednesday with State government officials, Petroleum Marketing Companies and Petroleum owners at Nongpoh Circuit House in Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi.

Speaking to reporters post the meeting, Pravin Bakshi, the State Commissioner Secretary of Civil Supplies, expressed satisfaction with the meeting's outcome. Various issues concerning the Mazdoor Union, drivers, and helpers were discussed extensively.

The Commissioner assured that the State government will provide support to the Union, including ensuring basic minimum wages, Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), and upholding statutory rights for its members.

Regarding allegations of mistreatment by the State police against some truck drivers and helpers, Commissioner Bakshi stated that necessary actions have been taken, urging the Police Department to facilitate smooth transportation without causing inconvenience to the drivers and helpers.

However, Commissioner Bakshi refrained from providing extensive details regarding the alleged police involvement, citing an ongoing investigation into the matter.

A leader of the Mazdoor Union clarified that the Union did not even call for a strike, stating it is just a misunderstanding. However, following the meeting held on Wednesday, they intend to discuss the minutes of the meeting with supervisors at the Union Headquarters in Guwahati.

Furthermore, the Mazdoor Union leader reassured the public that there is no need for panic as it was a misunderstanding, and all tankers are en-route to continue the supply of petroleum to Meghalaya.
