Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma raises concern over illegal immigration in state

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on the occasion of Independence Day stated that the resolution on Inner Line Permit (ILP) was taken up by the state government over issues concerning illegal immigration.

Speaking to the media over questions concerning implementation of ILP to control illegal immigration in state, CM Conrad mentioned, “ILP is related to issue concerning illegal immigration into the state. I have always maintained that there are multiple mechanisms to look into or find ways and means to stop all the illegal immigrations. And hence ILP is one of those policies which have been applicable in other parts of the country as well; based on that we have passed a resolution”.

Maintaining that the Government of India is yet to reply on the demand for ILP raised by the Meghalaya government, CM Conrad further stated, “ Apart from the ILP we have even passed the MRSSA act which was sent by the Governor at that point of time. Hence, we have been pursuing multiple options, to achieve the ultimate goal to have control over illegal immigration, that is there and a mechanism. The answer lies with the Government of India. We have time and again put pressure on the government to find a way to address the issue, whether it is the MRSSA or the ILP”

Negating the fact the tourism and ILP are two different subjects although both are being affected, the Meghalaya Chief Minister claimed, “Let’s not connect tourism with ILP. They are two different subjects. Obviously they are affected. There is some effect on the ILP issue. Certain permissions is required. But it is not necessary that these two needs to be connected. Tourism is a main area for revenue generations as for employment for the state. We will continue to push the overall infrastructure of tourism in the continue to work hard on that direction”
