Nagaland Director General of Police Rupin Sharma has addressed rising concerns over the possible influx of evicted settlers from Assam’s reserve forests into Nagaland.
In a statement, he clarified that those being termed as "illegal immigrants" may not necessarily be foreigners but rather illegal settlers in forest areas.
"The issue flagged by many is linked to the eviction drives conducted by the Assam government. These evicted individuals, while illegally occupying reserved forests, cannot be immediately branded as illegal immigrants or Bangladeshis without proper verification," Sharma said.

He further emphasised that the Nagaland Police have set up checkposts and intensified patrolling in the border areas to prevent unauthorised entry. “We have stopped many individuals who lacked the required documents. Until their nationality is confirmed, it would be incorrect to label them as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants,” he noted.
To tighten security, the state has increased deployment of police personnel and the India Reserve Battalion along the Assam-Nagaland border, aiming to maintain stability and prevent any demographic shifts caused by displacement.
