Guwahati, December 23, 2019:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dismissed the existence of any detention centre in the country and accused the Congress of spreading misinformation among the public.

While addressing the gathering at New Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, he blamed the opposition of playing vote bank politics in order to be in the game and appealed to the people to refrain from falling prey to such information on detention centres.

He said, “The Congress and its allies, some urban Naxals, are spreading rumors that all Muslims will be sent to detention centers... Neither is anybody sending the country’s Muslims to detention camps nor are there any detention centres in India...”

The Prime Minister’s statement that there are no detention centres in India has raised many eyebrows as the biggest detention centre of the country, has reportedly been set up in Assam’s Goalpara district. According to reports, there is a detention centre coming up in South Salmara as well. Detention camps have been doing the rounds post the publication of the final NRC on August 31.

He said that the Citizenship law or the National Register of Citizens (NRC) had nothing to do with Indian Muslims. “They have nothing to worry,” he said. Modi went on to say that the CAA had nothing to do with the Indian citizens. He also cited the difference between refugees and infiltrators.

PM Modi’s statement has come amid the rising agitation of the country against the contentious CAA which provides citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan on grounds of religious persecution.
