Gaurav Gogoi slams SC remarks on Rahul Gandhi, defends opposition’s right to question govt

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday reacted strongly to the Supreme Court's observation against Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s past remarks on the December 2022 India-China clash.

Gogoi called the court’s remarks “extraordinary and unwarranted,” asserting that it was the constitutional duty of the opposition to raise national security concerns both inside and outside Parliament.

Addressing the media following a meeting of the INDIA alliance leaders at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s office, Gogoi said, “A discussion took place on the Supreme Court’s observation against our leader Rahul Gandhi. Our party leaders felt that the remark is very shocking.”

Gogoi further said the alliance partners had agreed to issue a joint press statement condemning the court’s remarks.

“The Supreme Court judge made a remark that can be considered as an effort to limit the rights of political parties. The duty of the Leader of the Opposition is to raise the issues of the country. When the ruling party hesitates to answer questions on border security, people have the right to question,” he added.

The development comes after the Supreme Court pulled up Rahul Gandhi over his remarks related to the December 9, 2022, Tawang clash between Indian and Chinese troops.

The opposition has maintained that raising questions about national security lapses is not just a right but a responsibility in a democratic system.
