INS Imphal significant as there are 400 Navy personnel from Manipur, says Navy Chief Admiral

The Indian Navy's latest addition to its fleet, the stealth-guided missile destroyer 'INS Imphal,' was commissioned on December 26, 2023. This formidable warship is the first to be named after a city from the northeastern region of India, specifically the capital of Manipur. The choice of name for INS Imphal is a deliberate and significant one, as it commemorates the valiant Indian soldiers who fought in the Battle of Imphal during World War II. This battle was a turning point in the war and highlighted the strategic importance of the northeastern region in India's defense history.

The INS Imphal is part of the Visakhapatnam-class destroyers, which represent the latest in a lineage of indigenous destroyers that include the Kolkata class and Delhi class. With an impressive length of 163 meters and a displacement of 7,400 tonnes, the INS Imphal boasts approximately 75% indigenous content, showcasing India's growing shipbuilding capabilities and commitment to self-reliance under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.

Equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and anti-submarine indigenous rocket launchers, INS Imphal is designed to operate under nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare conditions. Its high degree of automation and stealth features enhance its combat capability and survivability.

The commissioning of INS Imphal at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, marking the formal induction of the third of four Visakhapatnam-class destroyers into the Indian Navy. The ship was delivered to the Navy on October 20 after extensive trials and successfully test-fired the extended-range supersonic BrahMos missile in November 2023, before its commissioning.

The naming of INS Imphal not only honors the sacrifices and contributions of the people of Manipur and the northeastern region to India's freedom struggle but also underscores their ongoing importance to national security, sovereignty, and prosperity. The Indian Navy's decision to name the warship after a northeastern city reflects a broader recognition of the region's significance and the valor of those who have defended the nation.
