During the Chanakya Defence dialogue, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi highlighted the ongoing complexities in India’s relationship with China, stressing that the situation along the border remains precarious. "China has been occupying our strategic considerations for quite some time," General Dwivedi stated. He emphasized the multifaceted nature of dealing with China, which involves a mix of competition, cooperation, coexistence, confrontation, and contestation.
Addressing the current status of the border situation, the Army Chief noted, "While the situation is stable, it is far from being normal and remains highly sensitive." He underscored India’s stance on restoring conditions to pre-April 2020 levels, referencing the ground occupation, buffer zones, and the current state of patrolling as areas needing resolution.
"As long as these conditions remain unresolved, we will consider the situation sensitive and will remain fully prepared operationally to tackle any eventuality," he remarked. The General also pointed to a critical breakdown in bilateral relations, stating, "Trust has become the biggest casualty," highlighting the strained dynamics between the two nations. The comments reflect India's readiness to handle contingencies while calling for a return to earlier, more stable conditions along the border.
