New Delhi: Sikkim Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang met with Minister of State (IC), Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India Shri Kiran Rijiju in New Delhi on Sunday.

The Chief Minister congratulated the Union Minister Rijiju for the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence for sports initiative to improve and promote sports at the grassroots level.

He extended his gratitude to him for the grant to refurbish Paljor Stadium by replacing the turf, Indoor stadium at Jorethang and also providing funds for Archery development at Phodong, North Sikkim.

During the meeting, he also requested for the development of a sports complex at Gangtok, East Sikkim and up-gradation of Jorethang and Chakhung public grounds.

Singh,stressed on having a composite sports complex at Khel Gaon with indoor facilities and capable of hosting state-level, national and international events.

The Union Minister has assured to provide adequate funds for the projects submitted by the State Government in the next financial year.

Both had a very cordial discussion on the issues pertaining to the North-East and Sikkim and the Minister has accepted an invitation to visit Sikkim soon.

The Sports Ministry on Saturday approved six centres as the Khelo India Centre of Excellence (KISCE). The centres will now be upgraded at a consolidated budget estimate of Rs 67.32 crore for FY 2020-21 and subsequent four years in an effort to identify and groom Olympic level talent.

The centers identified in each state and the financial support extended includes:

  • Assam: States Sports Academy, Sarusajai – Rs 7.96 crore
  • Meghalaya: J N S Complex, Shillong, Meghalaya – Rs 8.39 crore
  • Daman & Diu : New Sports Complex Silvassa – Rs 8.05 crore
  • Madhya Pradesh: MP State Academy – Rs 19 crore
  • Maharashtra: Shree Shivchhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, Pune – Rs 16 crore
  • Sikkim: Paljor Stadium, Gangtok – Rs 7.91 crore
