GANGTOK: Popular footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, known as Sikkimese Sniper for his shooting skills in football, has denied registering or taking vaccine until there will be enough vaccines across India as well as claimed that many are using political influence to get vaccinated earlier in a recently released video.

"There is a huge crisis of vaccines in India. I am not here to motivate, influence, or encourage anyone of you to put vaccine or not to put in. I think that is your individual decision and you will have to decide." said Bhutia in the video.

Bhaichung Bhutia added further, "But what I have decided is I am not gonna apply, not put vaccine till the time we have enough vaccines across India."

Even if India has started its vaccination drive all across the nation, but due to a shortage of vaccines, many wait outside and had to return back empty-handed from the vaccination centers.

Even in the Northeastern region of India, many are waiting for a slot to book on Cowin for vaccination, many yet to receive their second dose.

The early narrative was that India to go ahead with the world's biggest vaccination drive with two trusted vaccines in hand.

Serum Institute of India, the world's largest manufacturer struck a deal to produce a billion doses for developing countries including India.

As per reports released in the first week of March, only 3 per cent of the population has been vaccinated completely and around 10 per cent have received the first dose of the vaccine.

India is producing about 2.5 million doses per day against its requirement of 5.4 million. That way it seems a difficult task for India to complete vaccination at the earliest.

In between, The Indian government had exported the vaccines to other countries as Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured at the United Nations General Assembly that India’s vaccine manufacturing capabilities would be open to the world.

"I feel at the moment that including people under the age of 45 with comorbidities require vaccine much more than me. So till the time I am not going to get vaccinated, I will follow all the COVID guidelines, I am gonna stay fit and healthy," asserted Bhutia.

By the end of the video, Bhaichung Bhutia alleged, "I am hearing, including my state Sikkim, many people are using political influence to get vaccinated earlier. I think this should be a fair process for everyone."

Many incidents like this reported earlier where kins of different political leaders from states like Maharasthra and Uttarakhand etc have received vaccines even before they were officially eligible for inoculation.
