Sikkim witnessed heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, with several districts recording alarming figures as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert warning for continued intense showers.
According to official data, Khanitar in Pakyong district received the highest rainfall at 99.4 mm, followed closely by Namthang in Namchi district with 98.9 mm and Pakyong town with 93.2 mm. Other major rainfall recordings include Gyalsing (88.5 mm), Mazitar (81 mm), and Dentam (75 mm). Gangtok itself received 68.3 mm of rain.
The IMD’s Nowcast Weather Warning, issued from the Meteorological Centre in Gangtok at 1:36 am on Tuesday, predicted light to moderate rain with spells of intense showers to continue over parts of Gangtok, Gyalsing, Mangan, Pakyong, Namchi, and Soreng districts during the next two to three hours. Residents were strongly advised to remain in safe places.

Temperature readings showed Gangtok recording a maximum of 20.4°C and a minimum of 17.5°C, while Pakyong stood warmer at 23.8°C (max) and 19.2°C (min). Mangan reported 25.1°C and 20°C, respectively, even as heavy rain battered the region.
With roads already waterlogged and fears of landslides mounting in the hilly terrain, authorities have urged caution. The combination of heavy rainfall and fragile slopes poses a risk of disruptions to normal life, especially in rural areas and along highways.
