Nishikant Dubey bats for Bharat Ratna for Dalai Lama, confirms Bhutia-Lepcha program on Doordarshan

Chairman of the Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology (2024–25), Nishikant Dubey, during his four-day visit to Guwahati, Siliguri, and Gangtok, addressed several key cultural and media-related issues, including promotion of indigenous communities, national awards, and linguistic harmony.

Speaking to the media, Dubey confirmed that Doordarshan will soon launch a dedicated program showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Bhutia and Lepcha communities of Sikkim. "The program is set to begin from next month, giving national visibility to the vibrant traditions and languages of these communities," he stated.

Lauding the natural beauty and cultural richness of Sikkim, Dubey compared the Himalayan state to Switzerland, calling it one of India’s finest treasures. He emphasised the importance of integrating regional cultures into mainstream broadcasting to preserve identity and promote inclusivity.

In a significant statement, Dubey strongly advocated for conferring the Bharat Ratna—India's highest civilian honour—on His Holiness the Dalai Lama, citing his lifelong message of peace, compassion, and harmony. “The Dalai Lama is not just a spiritual leader but a global icon for peace. India must recognise his immense contribution,” he asserted.

Dubey also briefly commented on the ongoing language-related tensions in Maharashtra, calling for mutual respect and understanding among linguistic groups. He emphasised the need for unity in diversity and urged political and social leaders to work towards peaceful resolutions in such sensitive matters.

His visit marks an important step in reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to cultural preservation, media outreach, and inclusive development across the Northeast and beyond.
