Sikkim CM at India Today Conclave: No misuse of central funds; state remains focused on climate action

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang addressed concerns regarding the state’s access to central funds and its approach to climate change while speaking at the India Today Conclave.

Responding to a question from journalist Rajdeep Sardesai on whether Sikkim faces difficulties in securing central funds, Tamang dismissed any such challenges. He emphasized that past perceptions of fund mismanagement were baseless and that under the current administration, funds are being effectively utilized for designated projects.

"Earlier, there was a perception that funds were sanctioned but not utilized for their intended purpose—this is completely wrong. There is no challenge in securing funds today. Before 2014, the Northeast was seen as a political platform, but after 2014, it has become a developmental platform. In Sikkim, every sanctioned fund is used for its designated project, and we are one of the states where execution surpasses others without any misuse," Tamang stated.

On the topic of tourism challenges and climate change, particularly after the devastating flash floods that hit Sikkim, the CM acknowledged the threats posed by glacial lake outbursts and other environmental risks. He assured that the state government, with support from the Centre, is actively working on climate resilience measures.

"Sikkim has many lakes in danger zones, and we are addressing this issue in collaboration with the Central Government. Initiatives like ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (One Tree for Mother’s Name) are part of our broader climate strategy. With these efforts, Sikkim will continue to hold its title as the Greenest State of India, with forest cover increasing to 47% and an additional 2.57% growth in green cover," he added.

Tamang’s remarks reinforced Sikkim’s commitment to sustainable development, ensuring efficient governance, environmental conservation, and responsible tourism.
