Sikkim on September 11 observed the 59th Nathula Vijay Diwas, commemorating the courage and sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces during the 1967 Indo-China war led by the late Maj. Gen. Sagat Singh.
The commemoration, held at Nathula, was graced by Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, along with senior Army officials, dignitaries, and family members of the war heroes.
Nathula Vijay Diwas, celebrated annually on September 11, holds historic significance as it marks India’s resolute stand and victory against Chinese forces at the Nathula, Dokala, and Chola passes.
The Governor and Chief Minister paid rich tributes to the fallen soldiers and lauded the role of Maj. Gen. Sagat Singh, under whose command the Indian Army successfully repelled Chinese aggression.

As part of the celebration, the 17th Mountain Division of the Indian Army, Gangtok, organised a symbolic bike rally comprising 60 bikers, including women participants. The rally passed through Nathula Pass, Dokala Pass, and Chola Pass, serving as a reminder of the strategic importance of these border posts and the sacrifices made by the Indian Army.
Speaking at the event, Governor Om Prakash Mathur hailed the courage and supreme sacrifices of the martyrs, emphasising that the nation continues to draw inspiration from their valour. He also acknowledged the efforts of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for supporting such initiatives and for strengthening infrastructure at Nathula.
The commemoration witnessed the presence of Commissioner-cum-Secretary to the Governor, Jitendra Singh Raje, GOC of 17 Mountain Division, Maj. Gen. M. S. Rathore, senior Army officers, family members of late Maj. Gen. Sagat Singh, jawans, students, and teachers, who came together to honour the heroes of 1967.
