The Tripura unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to cancel all its public meetings in view of the sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in the state, BJP state spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee said.
Briefing the media persons after party’s state executive meeting, Bhattacharjee said, “The party has convened a series of meetings in the state headquarters of the party today and in all the meetings, the party workers have been directed to stay away from organizing mass public meetings in their respective areas”.
On what transpired in the meetings, he said, there are several wings of the party. All the wings in presence of party’s higher functionaries including the Chief Minister have held a series of meetings to discuss the overall situations of the political dynamics of the state. All the party workers are directed to maintain social distancing and to be prepared for any emergency situation when they can be contacted to help the administration. It has been also directed that if any kind of requirement emerge, organizational meetings can be done but only in presence of 20 people and not more than that, he told reporters.

On being asked specifically regarding the letters written by BJP MLA Sudip Roy Barman, he said, “The party is not taking such issues lightly. It is quite normal that a party leader will seek some information from the government but if there is some hidden agenda to tarnish government’s image, it will not be seen as a good signal. If any MLA is not fine with the party, he or she has all the liberty to resign and contest in re-election that will further clear the public opinion”.
Party’s General Secretary Tinku Roy taking a dig at the CPIM’s claims of relief distribution and blood donation camps, said, “The BJP’s youth wing is consistently organizing blood donation camps and welfare activities throughout the state but never branded this activity in party’s colour. The CPIM in the name of organizing blood donation camps and other welfare activities put forth party’s flag. This kind of stunts are not anymore sufficient to gain public attention”.
Tripura has registered a total of 2268 confirmed COVID-19 cases; of which 661 are active and 1604 have been cured and discharged while three died due to the infection so far. The state has the second-highest COVID-19 cases in the Northeast.
