Tripura: Brus Call Off Road Blockade after Govt Promises Free Ration till Nov 30

Agartala, November 7, 2019:

The agitating Bru refugees, who had staged a road blockade met a team from the Tripura Government on Thursday, at the end of which they called off their week-long protest.

A high power ministerial team comprising Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Debbarma, Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Tribal Welfare Minister Mewav Kumar Jamatia and minister for social welfare Santana Chakma went to Kanchanpur on Thursday to sort out the tangled repatriation process of Bru refugees from Mizoram stranded in north Tripura.

After the meeting with the Tripura ministers, the bru refugee have withdrawn their road blockade and agitation program.

Deputy Chief Minister Debbarma announced that the government will provide ration till November 30 this year. He also urged to the refugees to come to Agartala and sort out their problems by talking with the government heads. He also advised that but they should go to Mizoram, because their ultimate solution is lying there.

Sources confirmed that the state government will provide rations starting from tomorrow.

From October 1st this year, the central government had stopped ration camps to refugee camps.

The Central Government has decided that they will not continue the refugee camps at Kanchanpur anymore. More than 35,000 Bru refugees are staying different refugee camps at Kanchanpur since last two decade after they fled from the Mizoram due to ethnic clash with the Mizos.

The 9th phase of repatriation has started from 1 October this year, and nearly 700 people have been repatriated to Mizoram from Tripura.

The Bru refugees are agitating against the government decision not to provide ration in refugee camps. Since 31 October they blocked the Anandabazar-Dashda road. Eight people have so far died in the camps, reportedly of starvation.
