BSF personnel among three held in Tripura with brown sugar worth Rs 5 lakh

Tripura Police have arrested three persons, including a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, for allegedly possessing brown sugar valued at around Rs 5 lakh.

The arrests were made late Wednesday night following a joint operation by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Tripura Police.

Officials said the operation was launched based on a tip-off that some individuals were transporting narcotics. During the raid, three suspects were detained — Sajiul Islam (22) and Farid Akhter (23) from Assam, and Salim Uddin (36), a BSF personnel posted with the 122nd Battalion at Santirbazar in South Tripura district.

Police recovered 128 grams of brown sugar, packed in 10 cases, from their possession. “We received specific information that some persons would be travelling with brown sugar. Acting swiftly, the GRP and Tripura Police jointly conducted an operation and detained the trio,” a senior police official said.

A case has been registered against the accused, and they will be produced before the court. Authorities have pegged the market value of the seized contraband at approximately ₹5 lakh.

Investigations are underway to determine whether the suspects are linked to a larger drug trafficking network operating across the region.
