251 sedition cases registered during Sonowal-Govt, 88 in Kokrajhar

Guwahati, February 4, 2019:

As per Assam Cabinet Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, 251 total number of sedition charges have been registered during the reign of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Thus, it is proved that the CM’s campaign promise of “sarba dixe ananda” (in every direction there is happiness) does not apply to opposers of the current administration’s policies.

Patowary made the admission after being asked by the leader of the opposition, Devabrata Saikia, how many cases had been registered under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code during the tenure of the current Government.

Eighty-eight of the cases were registered in Kokrajhar district, while only 5 were registered in Bishwanath in Assam.

It is to be mentioned that the Latasil police had leveled charges of sedition against KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi, noted intellectual Hiren Gohain and senior journalist Manjit Mahanta during the wave of anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Bill protests which have taken root in the state of Assam.
