New Delhi, July 29, 2019:

On the occasion of International Tiger Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the All India Tiger Estimation Report 2018, titled "Management Effectiveness & Evaluation of Tiger reserves that records 2,967 tigers existing in the country.

The report said that the population of tigers in India has increased from 2,226 in 2014 to 2,967 in 2018, a rise of 33 per cent.

Making a comparison to the super hit blockbuster movies, Modi said, “The story which started from 'Ek Tha Tiger' and reached to 'Tiger Zinda hai', shouldn't end there.”

He added, “Nine ago, it was decided in St. Petersburg that the target of doubling the tiger population would be 2022. But we achieved the target four years early. There was serious concern about the decline in the population of tigers some 15 years ago. It was a big challenge but with determination, we’ve achieved our goals.”

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the census is conducted every four years. The latest survey used 26,000 camera traps that took almost 350,000 images across known tiger habitats.

It is to be mentioned that Global Tiger Day, often called International Tiger Day, is an annual celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation, held annually on 29 July. It was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit.
