Guwahati, December 21, 2019:

All Assam Students' Union (AASU) Chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya on Saturday gave the clarion call for the implementation of the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord amid the perceived dangers posed by the highly controversial amendment of the Citizenship Act.

Speaking exclusively to Inside Northeast, Samujjal Bhattacharya alleged that the Government is always trying to "confuse" the people. "For taking extra load on behalf of the country, we are getting Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, it is not for taking load of foreigners who came from '71 to 2019", he said, adding the Clause 6 is a "must".

Speaking on the lines of the women's protest against the Bill, Bhattacharya said, "The demand is clear: the CAA must go. Today, it is unprecedented, women came out to lodge their protest -- very clearly and very loudly -- in a non-violent way, That the CAA must go."

The AASU leader also stated that Clause 5 of the Assam Accord -- Detection, Deletion, Deportation -- is the 'soul' of the Accord, and Clause 6 is not the only Clause that should be implemented. The AASU leader further urged the Indian PM Narendra Modi to "show his respect" for the people of Assam and Northeast by scrapping the CAA.

It may be mentioned that massive 'all-women' protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act were orchestrated by the AASU, which has been spearheading protests against the contentious Act.

In Guwahati city, women from all walks of life took part at a mega-protest at the historic Latasil Platground, where they launched into evergreen classics by the bard, Bhupen Hazarika. Grandmothers, many of whom had participated in the Assam Agitation (1970-1985), were the highlights of the protest.
