Kokrajhar, 10 June, 2019:

The Army has refuted the claims of local media that the vehicle involved in the Bilasipara road accident in Assam on 9 June, in which relatives of a local MLA expired, belonged to the Army.

According to the Army, the vehicle and the driver both were of a civilian contractor provided by the Deputy Commissioner for use and was on its way to PS Salkocha along with a Police party under SI of PS Salkocha, after conducting an operation.

In fact, after the accident, in spite of being injured themselves, Army personnel evacuated the civilian passengers in the following Vehicle. The Army has also denied the rumours being spread that the civilian driver was intoxicated at time of the mishap and that spreading such uncorroborated news is an attempt to malign the image of the Army. The Army has also expressed it's condolences to the family of the deceased.

The head-on collision between two vehicles took place along the National Highway (NH) 31 at Sirakuta area in Bilasipara town of Dhubri district of Assam. According to the reports, four people of a family died on spot. Police sources said the family was coming from Goalpara in their Swift Dzire car to Golkganj.

When they reached Gaurang Nagar in Bilasipara, a speeding Scorpio from the opposite side rammed into their car, leaving four of them, including a child, dead on the spot.

Following the incident, some locals had blocked the National Highway and alleged that the driver of an army vehicle involved was drunk. The mob vandalised the alleged army vehicle. Now, the army has finally come forward with a statement and denied that the vehicle belonged to the army.
