Assam daughter Nijora Phukan has initiated a positive campaign amid the turbulence in Assam following the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The ‘green mission’, as she terms it, is one step closer to a greener India, she believes.
Phukan aims to raise the awareness regarding climate change and environmental pollution through her mission in a unique way – she will walk the path from Charaideo in Assam to the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi, taking her message of preserving the environment to the President Himself. There, she intends to submit a memorandum to the President and the Environment Minister, where she will present a number of demands to the duo.
Speaking to Inside Northeast, Phukan has said that she wants an Environment University to be set up in Assam; an Environment Security Force; moreover, she wants a Law to preserve the environment.

"I am the founder of an NGO called Brikkho Bondhu and we had earlier organised some environmental campaigns in Sibsagar itself. Then on December 1, we decided to walk our way to a greener country. The objective is to make the people aware of environmental protection", she told us.
The 'green' crusader believes that it is significant for everyone to be aware of environmental degradation. During this awareness programme, she plans to reach out to the masses, and has urged the people to come forward to participate in this noble endeavor.

"The aim is to submit a memorandum to the President. Several environmental organisations are in talks with me, and we wish to take our concerns to the highest rungs of the Indian Government in the power corridors of Delhi", she said.
Amid the raging protests against the CAA across the nation, Phukan's initiative is being seen as a positive effort to raise concerns about the issues that actually matter.
