Assam Son Justice Ranjan Gogoi Retires as CJI

Guwahati, November 17, 2019:

Sworn as the 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018, Justice Ranjan Gogoi retired on Sunday.

Being the first person from the northeast to be appointed as the CJI, Gogoi is being credited for bringing the curtains down on the age-old politically and religiously sensitive Ayodhya land dispute.

This was one of the historic judgments in the country, and Gogoi imprinted his name in the annals of history, as the case dates back to 1950 in the Supreme Court.

Gogoi was one of the 'gang of four' senior-most judges in January last year who questioned the then CJI's way of functioning, arranging a press conference.

He remarked it as “independent judges and noisy journalists are democracy's first line of defence.” Gogoi believed in ‘revolution’ rather than ‘reformation’.

With 13 months of tenure in his hand, the CJI gave verdicts to many important cases of the country including Kerala’s Sabarimala Temple issue, CJI office under Right to Information (RTI) Act, revive petition of Rafale deal, etc.

Serving as the CJI, he also monitored one of the biggest exercise of the country and his native state, ‘National Register of Citizens’ (NRC)

Friday was the last day of his judicial work and he sat in the Supreme Court's number one court for just about four minutes during in presence of lawyers.

Before leaving the office, Gogoi wrote a letter lauding the press for its "maturity" and "character" in preventing "canards and falsehood" in "trying times" of the judiciary.
