The Mid-Day Meal workers on Thursday staged a massive protest at Kahilipara in Guwahati demanding hike in their salary and opposed the decision of the Government to hand over the Mid-Day Meal scheme to private NGOs.
The Midday meal workers in Assam get a salary of only Rs 1,000 every month which they are demanding to be hiked up to Rs 5,000. There are 1.9 lakh mid-day meal workers in Assam working in different schools.
In a 2017 memorandum sent to the then education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state government sanctioned an additional Rs 5,000 per month to the workers which have not been paid to the workers till date.
