Guwahati, June 14, 2019:

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Hojai Shiladitya Dev has blamed it on Islamist fundamentalist groups for the uproar over Citizenship Amendment Bill in Assam.

In an interview with Inside Northeast, BJP MLA Dev said that people of Assam are not against the Bill rather the Islamist fundamentalist groups are trying to create turmoil in society.

“People of Assam are not against CAB. Because CAB has been the issue of BJP and the way people voted in this Lok Sabha elections in Assam clearly shows that Assamese people are not against it,” the BJP MLA said.

According to Dev various Muslim organisations based in Bangladesh and Pakistan are using some of these leftist minded intellectual people to create a nuisance in the society against the Bill.

“Islamic fundamentalist groups are opposing the Bill. They are using some of the leftist minded intellectual people to create a nuisance in the society against the Bill. Because if the Bill is passed then the worst suffers would be the Muslims coming from Bangladesh,” he said.

“Today if somebody comes from Bangladesh whether he is Hindu or Muslim, he can get Indian citizenship after staying here for about 11 years. But if the Bill is passed then only if the minorities of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh countries come to India, live here for 6 years, will be eligible for applying for citizenship,” Dev pointed out.

Dev was of the opinion that the Islamic fundamentalist groups realized that Muslims coming from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh can never get Indian citizenship if the Bill is passed.

“So, they have created this design to use some of these nationalist organisations to create turmoil in Assam. But I believe Assamese people have understood the truth. Assamese people know CAB is neither going to create any problem for the Assamese society nor going to help Bengali Hindu community too much because 98 % of them are already Indian citizens,” he said.
