Guwahati, December 4, 2019:

Students of the prestigious Cotton University, at the stroke of midnight on Wednesday, took to the streets of Guwahati to burn the effigies of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Amit Shah, as a mark of protest against the contentious Citizenship Bill.

Challenging Union Minister Amit Shah over his resolve to pass the Citizenship Bill in Parliament, the students said that they will have none of it, and announced the continuation of the ongoing protests across the State.

The students also had stern words for Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who they hold complicit in the BJP's alleged "scheme" to enact the Bill to expand its voterbase with the inclusion of "illegal" Bangladeshi immigrants.

The Assam Chief Minister has also come under attack from All Assam Students' Union (AASU) protesters. Recently, Sonowal had to flee his residence in Dibrugarh to escape the wrath of an AASU procession which had reached his residence to demand answers.

Mrinmoy Kalita, who took part in the protest, informed Inside Northeast that the protests are being staged to warn Shah, and his allies in the Assam BJP that Assam will not 'capitulate' to the Bill. "Let this be a warning to Shah, and Himanta Biswa Sarma, that the people of Assam will not accept the Bill at any cost", he said, adding that the protests will be continued to prove "how much the students love their land and its people."
