New Delhi, February 18, 2020:

Delhi Police have filed a charge sheet in the Jamia Millia Islamia violence case that occurred on December 15 last year and named Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protester Sharjeel Imam as ‘instigator’.

Latest reports suggest that Delhi Police have filed the charge sheet under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including riots and attempt to murder.

Police have also reported that empty bullet cartridges of 3.2 mm bore were found post the December 15 Jamia-New Friends Colony violence.

Apart from mentioning Anti-CAA protester Sharjeel Imam, the charge sheet has also mentioned the role of Popular Front of India (PFI) in the violence that sent the Anti-CAA message across the length and breadth of the country.

Delhi Police’s charge sheet carries statements of more than a hundred witnesses of the Jamia violence according to reports.

It may be mentioned here that students of Jamia Millia Islamia and locals protested on December 15 against the controversial amended Citizenship Act, which had been widely condemned by the public of the Northeastern states like Assam.

Sharjeel Imam’s mention as an ‘instigator’ of the Delhi episode further complicates his case as he is already slapped with sedition charges for his provocative speech about separating Assam and the northeastern states from the country.
