Discussion on Garo Autonomous Council in Assam heldAutonomous

Guwahati, December 6, 2018:

A delegation of the United Garo Autonomous Council Movement Committee (UGACMC)- Assam State committee had a discussion with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on the creation of a Garo Autonomous Council in Assam on satellite basis.

Reportedly, the UGACMC demanded that a separate satellite autonomous council be formed for the Garos living in Assam. The UGACMC stated that if the government fails to fulfil their demand then they would be forced to boycott the upcoming parliamentary polls.

Various Garo organisations have been demanding for a separate autonomous council since 2003 after the Garos were granted the Scheduled Tribe status.

The body alleged that the Garo areas have been the most neglected part of Assam by successive governments and there has been improper utilization of allocated funds which in itself is minimal and insufficient for implementation of schemes for the development Garo areas.
