Guwahati, March 14, 2019:

The historic Saraighat Bridge that developed major cracks will remain closed for the next 90 days from March 15 (Friday) from morning 6 am onwards to carry out repair work.

The historic bridge, built at the site of Ahom general Vir Lachit Borphukan’s triumph over the mighty invaders, the Mughals, had developed cracks before December 26, 2018.

The bridge, which was completed in 1962, is finally starting to show the effects of aging as craters have started developing in what is seen as an alarming development for commuters plying the route as it can lead to accidents.

The Bridge connects two shores of the Brahmaputra at Assam’s commercial hub Guwahati and is the first rail-cum-road bridge built in the region.

The bridge was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and was officially named the ‘Battle of Saraighat’ after the famous war fought in 1671.
