Various Karbi organisations of Karbi Anglong have condemned the act of an individual from Bokajan who is allegedly distributing leaflets urging people to observe November as “black day”.
The organisations – Karbi Students’ Association, Karbi Farmers’ Association, Karbi Students’ Union (KSU) and Karbi Students’ Youth Council held a joint press conference in Diphu on Sunday and deliberated on the issue.
In a joint statement, they said, “It has come to our notice that one Mr Niranjan Karmakar, on behalf of the Bokajan District Demand Committee, has been circulating leaflets calling a rally on October 30, 2018 at 10 am at SDO, Bokajan to mobilize public opinion to observe November 17, the day United North Cachar Hills and Mikir Hills District was formed in 1951, as black day for the non-tribals living in Karbi Anglong. We strongly condemn Karmakar’s intents upon creating communal tension in Karbi Anglong”.
The organisations pointed out that Karbi Anglong, previously Mikir Hills, is part of the largest Karbi territory which was recorded and known as Mikir Hills tract during the British rule.
