As per the petition filed by Rohit Chowdhury, the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Principal Bench, New Delhi in its order dated 26.02.2019, gave a deadline of two months to shift the garbage dump of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to Chandrapur.
However, the two months have already exceeded its deadline but no action has been taken by GMC to shift the garbage dump till date. Rather it is pumping out its toxic water into the Deepor Beel.
As per the official statement of the NGT stated, “The learned counsel appearing for Municipal Corporation submitted that a decision has been taken by the Municipal Committee to shift the dumping ground from the forest to Chandrapur and they will be taking steps to shift the same within the time frame fixed by the Tribunal.”

“Since the dumping ground has already been identified by the Municipal Corporation, they can take steps to shift the waste dumping ground from the present site in the forest land to the proposed site within a period of two months,” it added.
The notice further added, “The Municipal Corporation is also directed to submit an affidavit regarding the steps taken for shifting the dumping ground from the existing place Pachim Boragaon to the new site at Chandrapur.”
Official Respondents are directed to give copies of their compliance affidavits to the Counsel for Petitioner as well.
On the same notice, the NGT also asked the railway to limit the speed of the trains passing through the Deepor Beel to 30 km per hour.
