The court-martial against Major Leetul Gogoi, who came into the limelight for allegedly using a civilian as a "human shield" for using a civilian as a shield against stone pelters during Lok Sabha election 2017 in Kashmir has completed. Gogoi is likely to lose his rank as he had been held guilty by a court of inquiry of fraternizing with a local and being away from his place of duty in an operational area.

As per Indian Army sources, the disciplinary proceedings have been completed against him. He has been recommended to be punished with the loss of seniority by the army authorities that is to be confirmed by the Northern Command.

Kashmir police had detained Major Gogoi from a hotel in Srinagar with an 18-year-old Kashmiri girl on May 23, 2019. After the altercation, the Army ordered a Court of Inquiry (CoI) to probe the incident. The girl confessed that he went to the hotel of her own will but later denied it in front of the court, official sources said.
