Addressing the Speaker, the home minister adds that the government will provide asylum to all people, irrespective of religion. "The exercise of NRC will be carried out in the entire country," he said.

In regards to the people left out of the final NRC draft on August 31, Shah said, "People whose names are not in the NRC have the right to approach the tribunal...Assam govt is also ready to foot the expenses of people who cant afford a legal counsel."

It may be mentioned here that the final NRC draft that was published on August 31, left over nineteen lakh people "stateless".

The NRC process was further jeopardized when Prateek Hajela, the Coordinator who was overseeing the entire exercise, sought to be transferred outside the State, citing security concerns.

Now, Hitesh Dev Sarma has been appointed as the new Coordinator, but his appointment has been met with widespread controversy after it came to the fore that he had posted "communal" statements on Facebook.
