Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 7Hills Nexgran to establish a solid waste-to-charcoal plant, aimed at producing green charcoal from the city’s waste.
The agreement, signed by IMC Mayor Tamme Phassang, Commissioner Jilen Kago, and 7Hills Nexgram COO Bishwajeet Dey, will see the plant operational within four months. IMC will provide land and waste for the plant, which is expected to process 50 metric tonnes of solid waste daily, with future expansion plans.
Mayor Phassang emphasized the project's importance for addressing waste management challenges, including legacy waste processing and non-segregation by generators, stating it marks a significant step towards eco-friendly waste solutions.

Dey highlighted the plant's innovative technology, which processes mixed waste without chemicals, producing efficient, low-caloric-value charcoal with no environmental impact. The privately funded initiative will generate revenue through charcoal production, showcasing sustainable waste management practices.
The government of Arunachal Pradesh plans to expand the initiative to other districts, making it a model for green urban development.
