Tension prevailed in western Assam on January 21 as the All Assam Minority Students’ Union staged a massive sit-in demonstration in front of the Dhubri District Commissioner’s office, alleging widespread irregularities in the ongoing Special Revision of electoral rolls and what it termed a complete breakdown of administrative machinery in safeguarding the rights of legitimate citizens.
The protest witnessed high-pitched sloganeering against the state leadership, with demonstrators targeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and MP Dilip Saikia. Raising “murdabad” slogans, AAMSU accused the government of using administrative procedures as a pretext to harass minority communities and create fear among genuine voters.
AAMSU leaders alleged that the Special Revision process is being misused to level false allegations against Indian citizens by questioning their electoral status without valid legal grounds. They claimed that eligible voters are being arbitrarily excluded from the rolls, while complaints raised at the local level are being ignored by officials.

Escalating its stance, the student body issued a warning to officials involved in the revision exercise. Addressing the gathering, AAMSU general secretary Alfaruque Asikur Rahman said that if the alleged harassment of genuine citizens does not stop immediately, the organisation would not hesitate to take Booth Level Officers and election officials to court.
The union further alleged that certain field-level officials are acting with bias and violating constitutional provisions during the verification process. A memorandum was submitted to the District Commissioner demanding strict action against officials found to be bypassing established legal procedures during field verification.
The district administration, meanwhile, maintained that the electoral roll revision is being carried out strictly in accordance with Election Commission guidelines. However, AAMSU warned that it would intensify protests across the state if its demands for a fair, transparent and impartial revision process are not addressed.
