Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh on December 24 said the law and order situation in West Karbi Anglong was “totally under control” following unrest and violence in the district, adding that an Army column has also carried out a route march in the affected areas as part of confidence-building measures.
Speaking on the developments, the DGP said the administration was not relying solely on force to restore normalcy and was open to dialogue. He said the state government has provided time for a tripartite meeting involving the state government, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and representatives of those presenting their demands.

Detailing the incidents, Singh said vandalism and arson were carried out by a mob, during which administrative officials were also attacked. He confirmed that one person from the mob died during the clashes, while another victim, a differently-abled person, died after being trapped during an arson incident carried out by the mob.
The DGP appealed to those involved in the protests to come forward for talks and to help counsel the youth, stressing that violence does not benefit anyone. He said security forces, including the Army, police and central forces, have been deployed across the district to maintain peace.
Singh further said that legal action would be taken against those involved in the violence, adding that authorities have video footage of the incidents and that some individuals have already been identified. Additional security arrangements remain in place across West Karbi Anglong to prevent any fresh incidents.
