Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 1 announced a new monthly stipend scheme aimed at supporting students from the state as they pursue higher education. Speaking at a press conference, Sarma said that starting February 1, eligible male students will begin receiving financial assistance directly in their bank accounts, part of the government’s efforts to ease economic burdens on youth and promote academic progress.

Under the scheme, graduate male students will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000, while postgraduate students will be provided Rs 2,000 per month, according to the information shared by the Chief Minister. The initiative aims to encourage students to focus on their studies without financial stress and improve education outcomes across Assam.
However, boys whose parents are either government employee or are earning more than Rs 4-lakh annually will not be eligible for the scheme.
The new stipend plan builds on previous student support initiatives by the Assam government, including monthly incentives for female HSLC candidates and programmes designed to prevent child marriage by offering monthly support to female students from higher secondary to postgraduate levels under schemes like Nijut Moina.
