A major timber smuggling racket has been uncovered in Kheroni, under the Southern Forest Range of West Karbi Anglong, where illegal loggers are reportedly misusing the PM Awas Yojana (Grameen) as cover for transporting valuable wood.
Acting on a tip-off, the Forest Department seized two vehicles—bearing registration numbers AS 31C 0902 and AS 02E 0966—loaded with illicit timber en route from Kheroni to Lanka.
Officials raised alarm over the environmental impact of unchecked deforestation, calling for stricter enforcement to safeguard forest resources. Investigations are underway to identify the individuals behind the smuggling operation.
