A woman has been arrested in Dima Hasao district on charges of fraud, police confirmed on Friday evening. The arrest was made near the Cultural Hall area in Haflong town.
According to police sources, the woman, along with her husband Santu Das, had been residing in Haflong for a long time and was allegedly involved in duping several residents of the town. The couple is accused of defrauding multiple individuals, collecting nearly ₹60 lakh under false pretences.

Locals said that after taking the money, the woman and her husband were attempting to flee the town. On Friday, the victims gathered outside a rented house near Haflong’s Cultural Hall, where the couple had been staying, and confronted them.
Tensions escalated when the couple reportedly refused to return the money. Police arrived at the scene shortly after being informed and took the woman into custody. She was later brought to the Haflong police station for questioning.
Following the incident, the victims of the alleged fraud filed an official complaint at Haflong police station against both Santu Das and his wife. Investigations are currently underway.
